Place it once, quietly, and look at it until it lands
Noise is information. A foot that scrapes, taps twice or skates onto the hold was placed without being looked at, and that is what you are listening for.
Tell them the target out loud: one placement, no sound, no adjusting.
In pairs. One climbs, one stands back far enough to see the whole wall and calls out hold colours. The climber places on the named hold, quietly, and weights it before moving.
Half the group to each coach, on separate stretches of wall. Five pairs working one traverse is loud enough that nobody can hear a foot land, and hearing it is the whole drill.
Swap after four or five moves so nobody is only ever the caller.
Still noisy at speed. Cap them at one move every three seconds. Precision first, pace afterwards.
The caller rushes. Have the caller wait until the foot is weighted before naming the next hold. It slows both of them down, which is the point.
