Introductions and Ice Breakers

15 min

Everyone says their name, then a game that makes them use each other's

Equipment: Something to throw, a ball or a rental shoe

Learn it

Get everyone into a circle and describe the format before you start it: name, plus the answer to one silly question.

  • If you had a superpower, what would it be?
  • If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
  • If you could hang out with any cartoon character, who and why?

Go first yourself, then pass to your left. Make your own answer a ridiculous one, because whatever you set is the bar everyone else aims at.

Cover two more things while you have them in a circle: the rules and how strikes work, and that we are not the only people climbing today.

Apply it

Time Bomb. The circle faces inward. One player holds the ball, shouts somebody's name and throws it to them. The catcher has two seconds to shout a different name and get rid of it. Fail to name someone in time and you are out. Last person holding it wins.

Demonstrate understanding

  • Every athlete has said their own name out loud to the group.
  • By the end of Time Bomb they are using names rather than pointing or saying "you".
  • Nobody is standing outside the circle.

If the concept isn't sticking

Nobody wants to speak. Answer the silly question yourself first, at length and badly. Going second is much easier than going first.

One kid takes over. Drop Time Bomb's free choice and pass strictly left around the circle until everyone has held it once.
