Pick a real project and work it for a whole session

Learn it

Help each athlete pick a real project, one tag above what they climb comfortably, or the hard end of their current tag. Too easy and there is nothing to work; too hard and they spend the session on the first move.

Apply it

One to three climbs for the whole session, no more. For each one, in order:

  1. Read it and build a sequence.
  2. Climb up and try individual moves and chunks.
  3. Link the chunks together.
  4. Brush the holds.
  5. Rest properly, then go again.

Push them to work together on different betas, and to climb the easy sections efficiently so there is something left for the hard one.

Demonstrate understanding

  • They chose a climb that is genuinely at their limit, not a comfortable one.
  • They spent the session on one to three climbs rather than wandering.
  • They can describe their sequence for the crux from memory.

If the concept isn't sticking

They keep switching climbs. Commit them out loud to one, and hold them to it for twenty minutes.

They picked something far too hard. Move them down a tag rather than letting a whole session end in nothing.
